Employees at the Geraldton Branch of the Commonwealth Bank recently decided that they would like to enrich their local community by supporting the SHINE program.  A visit to the SHINE facility at Geraldton Senior College was arranged so that Branch Manager, Simone Colton, could meet some of the students and gain first hand experience of the program in action.

The girls shared the ‘SHINE handshake’ with Simone and welcomed her to the group by joining  a SHINE trust circle where she made the SHINE promise. Simone was then pampered with a hand massage by SHINE student, Tarleisha, and her nails were painted by  SHINE student, Trista .  The visit provided Simone with an opportunity to understand the objectives of the program and to consider ways in which the Commonwealth Bank could partner with SHINE to help develop students’ life skills.

An exciting outcome of the visit will be the introduction of a financial literacy workshop run by the Commonwealth Bank at the SHINE special purpose facility.  This ‘Start Smart’ secondary school program offered by the Commonwealth Bank includes a suite of workshops developed for students in Years 7 -11; ideal for SHINE girls.  Each workshop focuses on a different topic in depth and explores financial concepts with students such as understanding the impact of financial choices, getting their first job and managing their mobile phone as well as basic investment principles, savings goals and budgeting.

SHINE is excited to welcome the Commonwealth bank as a community partner to help SHINE support educate and empower young women with the life skills and tools to ensure their future is in their hands. Thanks to Simone and the team at the Geraldton Branch of the Commonwealth Bank – we look forward to working with you!
